Every once in a while, we get the chance to step outside our regular classes and take Aari embroidery to a completely different audience. That is exactly what happened when we were invited by the Department of Liberal Arts and Liberati, the Liberal Arts Association at Christ University, Bangalore, to conduct a hands on embroidery workshop as part of their annual fest, Jharokha.
The workshop, called Thread It, was held on the Bannerghatta Road campus and gave students a chance to experience Aari embroidery for the very first time, many of them holding an Aari needle for the first time in their lives.
Why We Say Yes to College Workshops

What Happened at the Workshop
The Thread It workshop was structured as a short, focused introduction to Aari embroidery, designed specifically for students who were complete beginners. Our trainers walked participants through the basics of Aari work, including how to hold the needle, understand tension, and create simple embroidered patterns on fabric.
Given the limited time frame of two hours, the focus stayed on making the experience approachable and enjoyable rather than overwhelming. Students got to see finished sample pieces, including embroidered blouse patches and neckline designs, before trying their hand at the technique themselves under guidance.
It was less about mastering the craft in one sitting and more about giving students a genuine, tactile introduction to a skill most of them had only ever seen on finished garments, never realizing how much detailed handwork goes into creating it. Many students were genuinely surprised at how much patience and precision goes into even a small embroidered patch, something that is easy to overlook when you only ever see the finished product on a store shelf or in a bridal collection.

We deliberately kept this workshop intimate, with limited seats, so that our trainers could give real attention to each participant rather than running a large, impersonal demo session. That approach reflects how we teach across all of our programs, whether it is a college workshop, an NGO collaboration, or our regular batches at the institute.
